A Fun Way to Keep Your Family Connected

When I started having children I didn't understand what being a mother really meant. I was lucky enough to have a great mom who was always very present in my life, but I didn't understand how much she did behind the scenes to try to keep our family close. I knew when I became a mom that I would be giving my family love, attention, changing diapers, feeding them etc., however, I did not understand that I would be the one who had to pull the strings tighter when our family started arguing or drifting apart. In realizing this, I began coming up with ideas to bring us all back together. Things like game nights, and karaoke sessions, group crafts etc. are a few of the things that seemed to pull everyone back on track. However, one of the best things that I found to do, was to put on a family talent show!

When the kids were younger, I would make them all get together, with my assistance, to create a performance for the family, whether that be for their Dad, Grandma, Grandpa etc. It was a way to get them to have to work together as a team, overcome their disagreements and for them to see the beautiful result that came from that teamwork. An outcome that would make them proud of themselves for what they had accomplished together. I started doing this when they were probably about 3, 5 and 7 years old. It was a fun way to get them to do something different and also to gain the courage to speak and act in front of people. Family and friends were the BEST audience because they loved the kids and were proud and honored that the show was done for them.

You may be thinking, I don't have time to create a whole show for the family, trust me, you do!! To give a little more detail about this, it doesn't require a ton of time! I would come up with the idea, give everyone an hour or two at most to prepare, and then we were on! I would have my oldest child MC the performance, as he was the oldest he could read the list of acts that would be taking place. I would let each of the kids pick what they wanted to do, if they wanted to sing, dance, juggle, tell jokes, perform magic tricks, whatever they wanted. Then we would put together that performance. Once each of the acts were decided, I would take turns working with each child to help them practice and to make sure they knew what they were supposed to do, and possibly come up with a costume or prop. Then I would call the audience to the living room (stage) where the show would begin! It was always a great time, usually hilarious and the kids and adults ALWAYS had fun!

As the kids got older, they would sometimes complain at first, but I just made it mandatory, saying something like, "You can be prepared or not but you will still be a part of the show, your audience is excited to see what you come up with!" and my kids always just fell in line. They didn't want to disappoint their audience. They started to get into it, making programs, ushering the audience to the couch and using props from around the house, and even in older years using Power Point for slide shows, music for in between transitions etc. It was (and still is) really quite fun for the whole family!

This may sound so simple and maybe even silly, but it really accomplished so very many things...

1.The kids were being creative;

2. They were learning new things/skills/songs;

3. They were gaining confidence in public speaking and performance;

4. They learned how to get along and work as a team;

5. They learned how to give a presentation; and

6. MOST IMPORTANTLY, all of us spent quality time together!

I have soo many family videos of these little performances and I absolutely cherish them! Give it a try!
